Spectrophotometer NANOCOLOR VIS II and UV/VIS II

The NANOCOLOR VIS II and NANOCOLOR UV/VIS II spectrophotometers are high-precision analytical instruments for all areas of water and wastewater analysis. With the two new spectrophotometers, MACHEREY-NAGEL is revolutionizing daily laboratory work and combining high-quality analytical instrument technology with outstanding user-friendliness. While the VIS II with a wavelength range of 320 - 1100 nm covers the entire visual range of light, the UV/VIS II (190 - 1100 nm) even allows measurements far into the UV range. Thanks to their icon-based user interface, the innovative photometers can be operated like a smartphone or tablet and, with their clear and high-resolution touch screen, make the daily measurement routine a real highlight.

The NANOCOLOR VIS II and UV/VIS II spectrophotometers use high-quality optics to achieve spectral bandwidths of less than 2 nm for high resolution and high precision measurements. Using a 2D barcode scanner and built-in cuvette recognition, the measurement process is automated from measurement to result storage.

Quality control

MACHEREY NAGEL attaches great importance to quality. For this reason, the new spectrophotometers are equipped with extensive quality control functions. In addition to the integrated, free instrument monitoring, the instruments offer many quality control options such as standard measurement, multiple determination and dilution series.
The IQK card 4 is generated directly in the instrument according to the requirements of DWA-A 704 and can be printed or exported for documentation purposes. NANOCOLOR VIS II and UV/VIS II thus offer easy-to-use control functions for efficient and accurate internal quality control.

Smart connectivity

The connection of analytical instruments to Laboratory Information Systems (LIMS) has become an integral part of the modern laboratory. The NANOCOLOR VIS II and UV/VIS II spectrophotometers offer a high degree of flexibility due to the wide range of interfaces (LAN, RS232, USB). With the REF 919691 network adapter, the VIS II and UV/VIS II spectrophotometers are ready for future challenges. In addition to the support of important network standards such as SMBv3, a network connection via Wi-Fi is also possible - a small foretaste of the networked laboratory of the future.
In addition, the intelligent and networked data export offers connection to a wide range of LIMS systems or operating logs.

Good to know

The NANOCOLOR spectrophotometers are the only devices in their class that allow a direct connection to ACRON. The concept was developed in collaboration with VIDEC and enables fast and smooth data import into the laboratory logbook.

Creation of user methods

Creating your own photometric methods is an increasingly important requirement for users in everyday laboratory work. The NANOCOLOR UV/VIS II and VIS II spectrophotometers combine planning, photometric determination and statistical evaluation on the photometer itself, eliminating the need for external software. Automation with NANOCOLOR UV/VIS II and VIS II

Automated laboratory robot solutions are also possible in cooperation with Skalar. Different samples and methods can even be processed simultaneously. The robot carries out the tests independently. After the reaction time has elapsed, the samples are measured on the NANOCOLOR photometer and the data is transferred to a PC in compliance with GLP. In addition to performing NANOCOLOR tests, special methods or dilution series can also be automated.

General information

As full-featured spectrophotometers, the NANOCOLOR VIS II and UV/VIS II meet all the requirements of daily laboratory routine. They feature the proven barcode technology for fast measurement of the NANOCOLOR round cuvette tests, but also offer the possibility of extensive color measurements as well as the recording of scans in real time. The following MACHEREY-NAGEL photometric test kits and color scales can be evaluated with the NANOCOLOR UV/VIS II and VIS II:

In addition to turbidity measurement in direct light, the NANOCOLOR UV/VIS II and VIS II spectrophotometers also have the option of nephelometric turbidity measurement at 860 nm. The light scattered by particles in the solution is measured at a 90° angle to the light source. This minimizes the effect of sample components that absorb at the same wavelength as the turbidity and provides a much more accurate indication of the turbidity present in the sample. In addition to pure turbidity measurements, everyday sample measurements are also affected by turbidity, which can falsify the measurement result. Therefore, the NANOCOLOR UV/VIS II and VIS II spectrophotometers are able to determine the nephelometric turbidity during the measurement of a sample in order to increase the reliability of the results and to warn the user if the turbidity in the sample is too high. An influence on the measurement result can be expected from about 10 NTU, while the human eye does not perceive turbidity until about 30 NTU.

Turbidity - a source of error in photometry

Turbidity is an often underestimated source of error in photometry. It affects the measured value and is not always easy to detect visually. Even small amounts of turbidity that are imperceptible to the eye can distort analytical results to an extreme degree.

Good to know

Turbidity can be difficult for the human eye to detect. Vial A shows a turbidity value of 0 NTU, while vial B shows a turbidity value of 40 NTU. Ultimately, the colorless turbidity is only visible to the naked eye against a black background.

Tips and tricks — Useful accessories

Network adapter (REF 919691):

  • The network adapter for the MACHEREY-NAGEL UV/VIS II and VIS II spectrophotometers allows these photometers to be connected to a PC, server or laboratory information management system (LIMS). In addition to the network connection of the photometer via a LAN cable (CAT 5E), the network module also enables a connection via WiFi. The network adapter can be configured flexibly to the standards of the IT infrastructure on site.

Sipper FP-200 (REF 919180):

  • High sample throughput in photometric analysis often requires a lot of time and resources due to sample preparation in different cuvettes and frequent cuvette changes in the photometer. With the NANOCOLOR FP 200 Sipper Pump and the corresponding flow-through cuvette (2, 10, 50 mm), the workload can be drastically and conveniently reduced for high sample throughput in the laboratory.

Barcode scanner (REF 919134):

  • The barcode scanner for NANOCOLOR spectrophotometers allows easy transfer of data such as user, sample location, etc. to the photometer and allows semi-automatic operation by linking it to a measurement.

Halogen lamp (REF 919604):

  • Halogen lamps are consumable parts and can be easily replaced by the user on the VIS II and UV/VIS II.

Case for NANOCOLOR VIS II and UV/VIS II:

  • The safe and sturdy cases for the UV/VIS II (REF 919624) and VIS II (REF 919652) can be used to transport the NANOCOLOR spectrophotometers easily and safely.

Quartz glass cuvette:

  • Quartz glass cuvettes are used for measurements in the UV range, as commercially available borosilicate glass is impermeable to UV rays. Quartz glass rectangular cuvettes are available in the sizes 2 mm (REF 919122), 10 mm (REF 919120) and 50 mm (REF 919121).

Closure for cuvette slot cover NANOCOLOR UV/VIS II (REF 919609):

  • For measurements with rectangular cuvettes in the UV range (190 nm - 340 nm), a measurement with a closure cap for the cuvette slot is recommended.

Tips and tricks — Common error sources

Incorrect results due to contaminated cuvettes:

  • The cleanliness of the cuvettes plays a decisive role in the measurement result. Clean the cuvettes with the included cuvette cleaning cloth before each insertion into the cuvette slot.

Incorrect measurement results due to a contaminated cuvette slot:

  • Sample solution leaking into the cuvette slot and contamination by dust/dirt can adversely affect measurements. Be careful not to spill sample solution when inserting the cuvettes. It is also important to protect the cuvette slot from contamination such as dust. If the cuvette slot is contaminated, it can be carefully cleaned with a cotton swab and isopropyl alcohol. Never use metal or sharp objects for cleaning.

Sources of error due to insufficient testing of the device:

  • The photometer should be checked twice a year according to the requirements of DWA-A 704. The test solution NANOCONTROL NANOCHECK 2.0 (REF 925703) can be used to check the photometric accuracy and the test solution NANOCONTROL NANOTURB (REF 925702) can be used to check the nephelometric turbidity measurement. In addition, further measures can be taken to monitor the instrument (e.g. lamp check or wavelength accuracy check, see manual).
  • MACHEREY-NAGEL recommends that you define your own inspection intervals depending on the intensity of use and in accordance with your own internal quality specifications.
